Sad news

Those who were at the club's final session of the season on Tuesday will have heard the sad news that Dick Newman passed away on 29th June aged 102.

Dick was a longtime resident of Warnham and a Horsham Chess Club stalwart, playing competitive chess well into his nineties. The photo shows him receiving his Life Membership award from the club. I have heard that he was still sharp right up until the end, hopefully chess helped keep those faculties bright.

Dick was a real gentleman and we had many tussles over the board - on the occasions that I would get the better of him with a surprise tactic he would laugh out loud and exclaim "oh Christopher Columbus!" which made me smile too. When he finally stopped playing regularly at the club he kindly donated to the juniors to help with their progression.

He requested no funeral but if I hear more from his family I will let club members know.

Dick was a delight to have in the club and was unfailingly modest and always generous. Such an asset to the club and and a model for us all to aspire to - sadly missed.
